Community Reading - September 10th 2026

Hola, mis amores! It’s Your Favorite Fortune Teller, Fernie, here with a community reading for the fabulous folx of Déjà Vu Esoterica!
I absolutely adore doing community readings; while they lose a little bit of the specificity of an individual reading, they gain the ability to help a whole slew of people figure something out that’s happening in the collective. As a queer person, community is often the thing that I count as the most important part of my “family.” As RuPaul has said, “as gay people, we get to choose our own family”, and I think that a community reading can help bring our families closer together.
For this reading, I’ve decided to go with a spread from my new book, the Joy of Tarot. This spread is called “The Fernie Special”, and is one of the 20 spreads to be found in that delightful tome. The Fernie Special is a 3-card spread, with each card answering a specific question.
Question 1 is, “What do I need to know?”
Question 2 is “Why do I need to know this?”
and Question 3 is, “What can I do with this information?”
The spread is read in the traditional manner, left to right, and I find can bring a whole lot of things to light with just a few cards. I decided to go with a general reading, with my overarching inquiry being something along the lines of, “What would help the Déjà vu community most right now?” Once I finished the reading, there was a clear answer, but I’ll go card by card so you can draw your own conclusions, as well.
The first card, the “what do I need to know” card, was the King of Wands reversed. I adore the King of Wands; handsome, passionate, with a huge wand, he’s exactly the kind of guy I could see myself marrying one day (and it doesn’t hurt that being his Queen of Wands would mean I’d be the beauty queen of the tarot, either!). However, the big problem with the King of Wands is that Fire hates sitting still, and as a King, you have a throne you have to occupy. The King of Wands wants to act, wants to move, wants to be out there, but the fact of being a king keeps him constrained to his seat.
When the card gets reversed, the King gets even more frustrated – his position becomes even more stifling. Therefore, we need to know that right now we are being called to act, to not sit still, to move and dance, and to do so with passion. It might be tough, we might have other things to do, but we have to at least hear the crackle of the flames
and desire a way to get ourselves into a new position.
As the card of “why we need to know this”, the Magician reinforces this idea. The Magician has his tools in front of him, ready to act and cast his spell. He knows that he is capable and that he can do whatever he puts his spirit to do. Whereas the King of Wands felt constrained by his position, the Magician feels empowered by his title; the magic he casts is his way of acting, and he can do whatever he wants because he has every element at his disposal. So, with the Magician explaining the King of Wands reversed, we can see that we need to act, that we have every tool available to us in order to act, and that we can’t just sit around because we feel like we have to. We need to pick up those instruments and begin to make our magic happen.
Finally, we receive our marching orders with the Three of Pentacles answering our “what can we do with this” question. The Three of Pentacles is the card of teamwork, and it is a fairly practical and grounded card after the fire of the King of Wands and the magic of the Magician. The Three of Pentacles is clear in its exhortation: we must work together if we are going to break free of the seat we’ve found ourselves confined to, and we must both learn and teach if we are going to do so successfully. There are people around us who can guide us, and we should heed their messages so we can then lift others up. With the Magician’s tools and the King of Wands’s passion, we have exactly what we need in order to build the space where we all can thrive.
What a delightful reading! With a clear answer to the question, we can see that it is our duty right now to act. We have the tools, we need to muster the drive, and then we must help each other create the force that will push us out of anything that is holding us back. As a community reading to receive a card of community, we are being very clearly told that it is only together that we can make this happen. Remember – there is no individual liberation until we are all liberated, and each one of us being liberated liberates all of us. Let’s work together to bring that gorgeous freedom to each and every one of us.
¡Los quiero mucho, mis amores!
