Letting My Freak (Witch) Flag Fly: How I Finally Told Everyone I was a Witch

I started working on writing a book on witchcraft and spirituality in March 2020 as a creative exercise and was not really sure if it would ever be seen by another person. I threw a little time at it here and there, as I felt inspired, and ended up deciding to rework it into something that other people might get a little benefit from by publishing the pieces to this blog. My practice up until 2017 had been mostly secret and deeply personal to me for much of my life (queue a joke about living in the broom closet). I’ve been a little nervous to share anything with the world that can’t be deleted for fear that it would come back to haunt me. 

Practicing witchcraft was still illegal in the UK as recently as the 1950s, and though it wasn’t technically illegal here in the US, it has destroyed careers and lives. Damien Echols was one of the West Memphis Three, a group of innocent teenagers convicted in 1994 of a brutal murder simply because they liked heavy metal and practicing witchcraft. He spent years on death row before he was exonerated. 

There are many people who just don’t take witches seriously, so I’ve mostly feared your garden-variety prejudice in sharing my spellcraft with others. It has taken me a little time and much acceptance of the fact that my practice isn't any stranger than some mainstream religious theology before I decided to let my freak flag fly. We’re talking about anthropomorphic snakes, genocidal floods, flaming bushes that speak, a man returning from the dead after days deceased, the concept of transubstantiation, any number of literal miracles, staffs turning to snakes, the angel of death, not to mention immaculate conception, and the many other strange occurrences mentioned in the bible and other sacred texts.

It took me some time to decide to even let this text be read by another person. Most of the people who know me know I’m already pretty “out there,” but opening Deja Vu left a permanent mark on the world that this is who I am, where I came from, and this is what I believe. The reason I have followed through with releasing it all is that every week there are dozens of people who reach out to us asking for guidance on these exact topics. This blog is for every one of them and any one else who has felt a calling in their bones to reclaim their power.
