In 1820, the mysterious German-speaking migrant John George Hohman scraped together what little he had to publish a remarkable collection of European occult and traditional folk knowledge: Der lange verborgene Freund. Later translated as The Long Lost Friend, Hohman's book was embraced by generations of audiences across southern Appalachia and among Hoodoo practitioners.

This gorgeous edition features the classic critical English translation by philologist Carleton F. Brown, a new introduction by folklorist Ceallaigh S. MacCath-Moran, and reproductions of incredible Pennsylvania German folk art by Kevin Alexandrowicz.
