What is Moon Water? How Can I Make It?

Moon water

The moon is inextricably linked to the element of water. It rules over the zodiac sign of Cancer and it literally influences the tides on our planet with its gravitational pull. Witches generally have a deep abiding love for the moon. I thought it best to share about infusing water with lunar energy. Moon water is perfect for cleansing tools, giving as an offering during a ritual, a base for infusions and potions, and I’ve even heard of witches using moon water in their bongs. If you’re an artist you can use moon water in your paintings or ceramics, or any other creative artistry.

You can sink crystals into the water to imbue the water with their properties, just don’t use any that have -ite at the end (like selenite, kunzite, azurite, and calcite for example) as those will dissolve, unless that is your intention. Also note that amber, turquoise, red coral, opal, and moonstone can be damaged if submerged in water for very long. Before using any stones for infusing in moon water be sure to check that it is safe for you and your crystals to do so!

Do be sure to only use glass containers when making moon water, we don’t want any sort of petroleum byproduct touching this sacred water, or for the rays of the moon to have to pass through it. If you intend to drink this water or put it on your body in any way be sure to use water that is safe to drink. Don’t use polished crystals during your process if you plan to drink or bathe in the water, as the rock polish is not safe for consumption. If you are using the water as an offering and aren’t going to consume it, naturally flowing water is extra effective. Collect from a spring if you’re intending this for a money spell, it carries the spirit of earth and abundance. Water from a clean lake brings placidity. Use river water to bring an energy of change. Sea water helps aid cleansing, protection, and banishing, as well as the manifestation of goals. Rain water supports growth, protection, and change, especially collecting the first rain in the month of May. Dew gathered before dawn is good for health spells and glamour work, said to be especially powerful if gathered before dawn on Beltane.

To make moon water

First you’ll have to choose your clear glass container and collect the water you intend to bless with moonlight. In the evening during the appropriate moon cycle, set out your jar of water, but only do it once the sun is down and the sky is dark from horizon to horizon. Leave it on a surface or window sill under the moonlight. Be sure to retrieve your jar of water in the dark of the early morning hours, before the first rays of the sun touch the sky. Don’t forget to label the jar with all details (source, date, moon cycle and sign, herbal or crystal infusions, etc), and feel free to collect as many different kinds as you need. Be sure to use it before it sits too long, or starts to smell funky.
