Our Relationship With The Divine

When beginning your practice, you’ll have to figure out how you feel about working with metaphorical entities and the spirit plane. This includes gods and goddesses, angels, ancestors, spirit guides, planets, animal spirits, and the like. Of course, not everyone chooses to put a face to the limitless mysteries of the universe. In those cases you'll just be focusing inward to connect with the power of the universe inside you, or outward to connect with the raw force of creation itself.

Some witches develop a deep relationship with one or more of the planetary energies. The depth of connection that can be developed with a planet is just as real as any other entity you form a pact with. If deities aren't your style and you don't resonate with working with ancestors or angels, you might feel yourself gravitate (pun intended) toward planetary forces. There are myths about the gods and goddesses they were named for that can help to understand what they are associated with, where their motivations lay, how they operate, and the ways in which a witch might develop a deeper relationship with these heavenly bodies.

Whatever spirits you do happen to decide to seek out, you should keep notes about what you learn and any connections you see, meditate on what you discover, and take note of any visualizations or thoughts that happen during this process. Dreams while you’re seeking these answers can also point you in the right direction. You can also open the channels to work with your ancestors or spirit guides. Some people work with angels. I’ve recently been researching to find out more about the religions of my ancestors, who they worshiped, and how. You’ll know what feels right for you. But before making offerings to any deity or spirit, do consider who they are and what relationship they might have with your ancestors. Get to know them and their stories before you start initiating a bond with them. You’ll want to make sure you’re compatible, just like with any other new relationship.
