Planetary magic & the classic planets

When I was getting started studying magic, the first area of metaphysical interest for me was astrology. Just getting into the basics of elemental energies was fascinating, as was the wildness of how we are all affected by the gravity of the heavenly bodies, just as our earthly oceans (and humanly menstrual cycles) are tied to the moon. It really opened my mind to the possibilities of magic, and every subsequent year that I learn a little more my mind continues to be blown. When you learn about the forces each planet presides over, it helps to align the timing of and the materials to use in ritual to ensure the greatest chances of success.

I only really work with the innermost planets, the ones focused on in classic astrology (and can be seen with the naked eye under the right circumstances) in my practice, here they are listed with their properties as well as the days of the week they rule over and a little about each.

The Sun - Vitality, success, energy, health, self expression, growth, leadership, optimism. Rules over light, Sundays and the sign of Leo. I’ve used Solar energy successfully in magic for seeking a new home. Solar magic is also excellent for spells supporting physical health and professional success.

The Moon - Astral travel, motherhood, intuition, emotional wellbeing, dreams, change, cycles, clairvoyance. Rules over foresight, Mondays, and the sign of Cancer. Lunar energy is present any time you use the moon to manifest. It's also ideal for emotional healing, love magic, and fertility spells.

Mercury - Movement, intelligence, travel, memory, business, divination, communication. Rules over friendship, trust, Wednesdays, and the signs of Gemini and Virgo. This is the ideal energy for spells to support merchants, divination, travel, good communication, and better organization in every sense of the word. It retrogrades a few times a year, so beware the slow down and reversal of this planet’s trek around the sun. Most of the planets retrograde at some point but Mercury is the most frequent backwards traveler. Carry fluorite or black tourmaline to offset. 

Venus - Abundance, indulgence, self care, fertility, harmony, good luck, beauty, justice, social affairs, self pampering, the arts, relationships. Rules over love, desire, Fridays, Taurus, and Libra. This is the best time for glamours (illusion spells) or spells that aid in love, fertility, or social life. Also the ideal energy for spells pertaining to legal matters.

Mars - Momentum; strength, defense, lust, sexuality, brawling, conflict, surgery, needles, wounds, pain. Rules over action and effort, Tuesdays, and the signs of Aries and Scorpio. Work with Mars to gain courage and honor, but be aware this energy is warsome and can be very aggressive.

Jupiter - Good fortune, expansion, money, luck, religion, spirit guides, mentorship, authority, careers, abundance, peace, higher knowledge, good health, blessings. Rules over rank, royalty, Thursdays, as well as the signs of Pisces and Saggitarius. Use Jupiter magic for anything you want luck in or to grow, especially money, health, and career.

Saturn - Protection, karma, grounding, boundaries, public reputation, all beginnings and endings, stability, cleansing, debt, discipline. Rules over ignorance and necessity, Saturdays, as well as the signs of Aquarius and Capricorn. Saturn magic is best for long term career or business spells, work to free prisoners, protection, and working with the dead.
